U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. After a lengthy discussion, they reached a productive resolution and agreed to initiate peace talks soon. Additionally, they invited each other to visit their respective capitals.
Although the date for their face-to-face meeting has not yet been set, they are expected to meet in Saudi Arabia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced that he discussed a long-term peace agreement with Trump following these talks. He is scheduled to meet with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a high-level defense summit in Munich on Friday.
Regarding the war, Trump stated on his social media, “It’s time to stop this ridiculous war that has brought death and destruction—an unnecessary war that serves no one’s interests. May God bless the people of Russia and Ukraine.”
Trump’s call for cooperation was supported by Putin, as confirmed by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
According to Trump, it is unlikely that Ukraine will return to its borders as they were before 2014. However, he mentioned that some areas of land from that time might be returned. Additionally, Trump agreed with Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett’s statement that the likelihood of Ukraine joining NATO is low. This statement is seen as a severe blow to Ukraine. It is anticipated that this stance will be more in line with the new U.S. administration under Biden, which is less sympathetic toward Ukraine than under the previous administration. Hegsett’s words are likely to be well-received in Moscow.
Zelensky, in an interview on Tuesday, suggested that land currently controlled by Russia in Ukraine could be exchanged for Ukrainian territory in the Kursk region as part of a peace agreement. However, Dmitry Peskov dismissed this idea, stating, “Russia has never discussed or will discuss exchanging territories. Ukrainian units must leave this territory.”
