President Donald Trump announced yesterday that he had seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman that was attempting to evade a US blockade.
The ship was reportedly intercepted by a US warship after it ignored warnings to shoot it down, causing it to stop after a missile fired from a US warship hit its engine.
“The US Navy is currently securing the ship,” Trump wrote on his social media account.
The Gulf of Oman is a section of the Arabian Sea that runs from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean through the Strait of Hormuz.
In response to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the US Navy has imposed a blockade on the ship, blocking cargo ships traveling to Iranian ports.
Yesterday, Trump also announced that new US-Iran talks would begin on Monday. The two countries have agreed to a 14-day ceasefire that ends on Wednesday.
A new round of talks will decide whether to extend the deadline.
Last Friday, the parties announced that they had agreed to fully open the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy transport. However, the next day, Iran closed the strait again and began firing on cargo ships passing through it.
Tehran authorities explained this by saying that the United States had not lifted its blockade of the Strait of Oman.
